C-reactive protein, therefore, should be used in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory data to make decisions about care.”

Can we consider erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein as a severity index in pemphigus vulgaris?
Background: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are 2 inflammatory indicators that increase in many pathologic and physiologic conditions. Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune skin disease in which autoantibodies against desmogleins cause acantholysis. In this study we have measured ESR and CRP levels in patients with PV to evaluate the relationship between an ...
متن کاملErythrocyte sedimentation rate and C reactive protein in the assessment of polymyalgia rheumatica/giant cell arteritis on presentation and during follow up.
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C reactive protein (CRP) were measured in 74 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR)/giant cell arteritis (GCA) on presentation, in the first month of treatment, and at long term follow up (up to 177 weeks). Before treatment the ESR was raised (greater than 30 mm/h) in all cases and the CRP was raised (greater than 6 mg/l) in 49/55 cases. The ESR ...

Thirty one patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) receiving standardised prednisolone treatment were followed up for one year with analyses of plasma viscosity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C reactive protein (CRP), and fibrinogen concentration. On the day of diagnosis all patients had an increased plasma viscosity and ESR, whereas the concentration of CRP was normal in three patient...

Permanent, severe loss of vision is a feared complication; however, it is not the sole possible devastating outcome of giant cell arteritis. Myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and limb gangrene may also occur. Thor acic aortic aneurysms are seen over 17 times more often in patients with giant cell arteritis than in age-matched controls. The optimal work-up includes erythrocyte sedimentation...
متن کاملRelationship of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate to acute phase proteins in polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis.
We have compared the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) with other acute phase proteins (C-reactive protein (CRP), alpha(1) antitrypsin, orosomucoid, and haptoglobin) in 108 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica and/or giant cell arteritis. There was good correlation between CRP and ESR, but the ESR was also found to have the highest correlation with disease activity. The additional measuremen...
